Job Description:
 
Amherst College invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean of Admission. The Assistant Dean is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $57,000 per year. Given Amherst’s distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
 
The Assistant Dean of Admission is a critical role within the Amherst College Office of Admission and the Diversity Outreach Team. The Assistant Dean leads important efforts around diversity outreach and recruitment, and with the entire Admission Office, seeks to recruit, admit, and enroll a talented and diverse student body.
 
The Assistant Dean holds significant responsibility as a member of the Diversity Outreach Team, including coordination of the Access to Amherst and Be a Mammoth programs. The Assistant Dean also oversees the Diversity Outreach Interns (Amherst College student workers). In addition to these duties, the Assistant Dean serves as one of the members of the admission staff responsible for first-year and transfer recruitment and evaluation, outreach both on- and off-campus, and participates as a voting member of the first-year and transfer admission committees.
 
Working with the Amherst College Office of Admission, and specifically the Diversity Outreach Team, requires a desire to engage on issues of antiracism and equity in educational opportunity. All members of the Amherst Admission team take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. Evening and weekend work sometimes required. The Associate Dean position is eligible for participation in Amherst College’s hybrid work program.

Summary of Responsibilities:
 
Student Recruitment and Evaluation
  • Create recruitment strategies and lead all aspects of recruitment travel within assigned geographic regions
  • Conduct in-person and virtual presentations and workshops for groups of up to 250 prospective students, guests and counselors
  • Cultivate relationships with high-school counselors, community college advisors and Community Based Organizations (CBOs)
  • Review applications for first-year and transfer admission, including primary oversight of applicants within assigned regional territories
  • Participate as a voting member of the first-year and transfer admission committees
  • Build and run queries for use and analysis in recruitment strategies, admission programs and application review via the Office of Admission’s CRM Slate
 
Diversity Program Management
  • Alongside the Associate Dean, serve as a leader within the Diversity Outreach Team
  • Support the planning and execution of the Access to Amherst (A2A), Early Overnight on Native Studies (EONS), Be A Mammoth (BAM), and CBO Counselor Fly-In programs
  • Hire and supervise the Diversity Outreach interns and student workers who assist with diversity outreach efforts, including A2A, EONS, BAM, on-campus and virtual programming, outreach activities, and content creation
  • Develop new and build upon existing partnerships with college access organizations
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean, coordinate and participate in other diversity outreach programs
  • Collaborate with division and campus partners, including Financial Aid, the Office of Identity and Cultural Resources, the Division of Equity and Inclusion
 
 
Other
  • Maintain accurate documentation, records, and data
  • Assist in the preparation of presentations, reports, or other deliverables
  • Support the team with ad-hoc tasks as needed
 
 
 
Qualifications:
 
Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid Driver’s License and successful credentialing is required in order to operate college vehicles
  • 2-3 years of experience in college access, admission, or higher education
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and able to communicate effectively with varied constituencies, including prospective applicants, parents, high school counselors, alumni, faculty and staff
  • Strong written communication skills; via written correspondence, can answer complex questions from students, parents, and counselors
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills; can prioritize and achieve multiple tasks
  • Strong presentation skills; can compellingly translate what is special about Amherst College to a range of audiences
  • Proficiency in the use of technology and programs, such as Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and think independently while working in a dynamic team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information
  • Experience working with diverse communities and contributing to an intentionally inclusive experience for all
  • Availability to travel approximately 15–20 days for recruitment, including community based organizations, high schools, community colleges, and college fairs for recruitment
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend responsibilities
 
 
Preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree from Amherst College
  • Experience with the CRM Slate
