Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Program Director serves a critical role on the Career Planning Team in the Feller Center for Academic Advising & Career Planning in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. The portfolio includes initiating and leading career focused outreaches, creating career-related activities for academic classes/BSOS student groups, developing career planning engagement points for students, individual career coaching for students, and leading the efforts for communicating/branding Feller Center Career Planning activities.

The Feller Center for Academic Advising & Career Planning, https://fellercenter.umd.edu/career-planning, assists College of Behavioral and Social Science (BSOS) students in career planning endeavors, including self-assessment, career exploration, gaining experience, and launching an internship, job, fellowship, or graduate school search. This position will be supervised by the Fishlinger Director of Career Planning in the Feller Center.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel, student affairs, education or a related discipline.

Experience:
  • Four years of professional, full-time experience in career services, advising, experiential learning, higher education, or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to approach work with an inclusive, holistic mindset and positive, growth-oriented manner.
  • Strong interpersonal and counseling/advising skills with ability to work with a variety of constituents.
  • Excellent communication skills including group presentation and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and initiate new programs.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, possess solid planning and organizational skills, and have the ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with diverse student populations.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential or similar certification.
  • Three years of demonstrated experience working with traditional-aged students.
  • Training and workshop development and facilitation skills within a higher education setting.
  • Professional experience in career services setting or industry involving advising/coaching.
  • Knowledge of, background in, or appreciation for behavioral and social sciences.

Additional Information:

Academic Outreach /Workshops (30%)
  • Lead the efforts in developing and delivering workshops, webinars, and class based assignments on career-related topics, including customized sessions requested by faculty, student groups, and administrators.
  • Initiate new programs to reach student populations at risk and adjust programming to meet evolving needs of all BSOS students and new academic initiatives.
  • Support interest and pursuit of graduate program attendance by developing sessions for interested students that offer connection points to alumni, graduate program exploration, and application preparation.
  • Lead/Manage collaboration initiatives with Academic Advising like the First Semester Career Inventory and the Career Planning Audit.

Career Coaching (30%)
  • Provide individual coaching and training for students through in-person and virtual appointments. Topics include, but are not limited to, career decision making, locating internship/jobs, graduate school research, developing a professional brand, as well as offering resume, cover letter, personal statement and mock interview reviews.
  • Develop and support alternative ways for students to receive feedback/support on application materials (i.e. virtual resume drop).
  • Advise, orient, and assist students in the use of occupational and job search resources.
  • Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of career path options and industry-specific information for behavioral and social science students.

Engagement (20%)
  • Conduct assessment, both recurring and new, relative to the Career Planning initiatives.
  • Direct and manage the office’s communication strategies to share events, programs, and resources to students and campus partners.
  • Manage the planning/logistics of events, such as career exploration panels, using strategic outreach and engagement methods.
  • Provide essential career services support for ongoing projects such as updating career guides/resources, overseeing student newsletter, managing database systems and maintaining/creating website content.
  • Support college career and curricular initiatives and engagement projects.

Administrative (20%)
  • Develop and/or update major specific Internship Directories in coordination with Academic Departments, as well as contribute to marketing co-curricular opportunities on and off campus.
  • Represent the office at student engagement/tabling events and support BSOS and Feller Center events when needed.
  • Assist in training staff on Feller Center initiatives and career planning topics.
  • Oversee the office email account and correspondence.
  • Contribute to yearly programming by assessing the needs and interest of students and collaborating with student groups, faculty, and administrators to identify and implement new initiatives.
  • Contribute to college graduation survey efforts.
