Job Description

TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE I, Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, to support several X-ray astronomy research projects via data analysis and (dry) laboratory activities, working within the group of Principal Research Scientist Herman Marshall. Work includes analysis of X-ray astronomy data from various satellites, including Chandra, Swift, and the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, data consisting of images and spectra of astronomical systems with black holes or neutron stars to be measured for timing, polarization, or spatial variations; prepare results for publication and scientific writing; laboratory activities including operating a source of X-rays and the X-ray beamline vacuum system, setting up and monitoring measurement sequences controlled by LabView-based virtual instruments, and assisting with system reconfiguration that may involve optical components and electronic detectors.

Job Requirements:

REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in physics or a related field; basic knowledge of astronomical telescopes and techniques; experience with astronomical data analysis; proficiency with python programming; familiarity with laboratory instruments such as vacuum systems, X-ray detectors, manipulators, and lasers; and technical writing in LaTeX. PREFERRED: Master's degree in physics or related field; experience with data from X-ray photon-counting detectors such as CCDs or sCMOS cameras; proficient IDL programming; or experience with LabView.
