Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, has an immediate need for a full-time DSS Student Services Specialist, in the Disability Support Services (DSS) Department. The work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. This is an exempt, non-bargaining, grade 27 position. This position is eligible for telework one (1) day a week. This eligibility is subject to change based on the needs of the unit.

Under supervision and/or direction, oversee the daily operations of the academic support center for disability support services. The incumbents are responsible for delivering instructional and student support services to, students with disabilities. These services may include coordinating/providing tutoring, arranging scribes and other auxiliary services evaluating assistive technology needs/options, and providing academic skill development in the areas of time management, organization, and study strategies.  

Regular contacts include counselors, faculty, staff, students, and the public to exchange information and to provide and receive direction.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee the operations of the academic support center for Disability Support Services and perform administrative functions to support center operations.
  • Manage peer-tutoring program. 
  • Plan, implement and coordinate peer-tutoring program.
  • Oversee peer-tutors, scribes and readers, coordinate work hours, manage program budget, and facilitate training for peer-tutors.
  • Assist with College outreach training and orientation services.
  • Provide instructional and student support services for students.
  • Provide individualized tutoring, assistance in time management, study skills, memory development, test taking strategies, organizational skills, note taking skills, learning styles and overcoming test taking anxiety.
  • Monitor student academic progress and provide necessary intervention.  
  • Provide assistive technology and accommodations to students in collaboration with a DSS counselor.
  • Instruct students and faculty on usage of software/ hardware and assistive technology.
  • Assist Assessment and Testing Center in implementing accommodations such as readers, scribes, and formatted exams for the use of assistive technology.
  • Update, maintain and report on records of assistive technology, adaptive equipment, software and hardware as requested by the collegewide assistive technology specialist.
  • Troubleshoots assistive technology and refer problems as appropriate to assistive technology specialist and IT.
  • Communicate student needs and concerns to DSS counselors.
  • Develop and implement study skills workshops in a virtual format.
  • Provide guidance to faculty tutors regarding learning strategies specific to students with disabilities.
  • Conduct assistive technology evaluations to determine appropriate solutions for notetaking, dictation, and reading.
  • Collaborate with other Learning Center coordinators regularly to ensure continuity of services across all campuses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in an academic field relative to the area of responsibility (e.g. Counseling; Education; Student Development)
  • Three (3) years of related experience providing instructional and student support services for students; instructing students on the usage of hardware and software applications; and knowledge of various assistive technology applications.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Knowledge of disabilities and appropriate post-secondary accommodations, thorough knowledge of federal laws pertaining to students with disabilities, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act and its Amendments.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with students with disabilities.
  • Experience working in a college environment.
  • Experience hiring and supervising peer tutors.

Hiring Range: $63,375-$82,376 annually. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity.  The maximum salary for this position is $101,377 annually.
