Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, invites qualified candidates to apply for tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor level, with a target start date of August 2025 or later.

Priority will be given to candidates with expertise in one or several areas of strength of the Department, including advanced manufacturing, applied mechanics, biomedical devices & systems, computational science, design & optimization, dynamics & control, electronics reliability & sustainability, energy generation & storage, energy for the built environment, fluid mechanics & hydrodynamics, heat transfer & thermal systems, microsystems, nanoscale science & quantum systems, risk & reliability, robotics, smart materials & structures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates should have received or expect to receive their PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Reliability Engineering, or a related discipline prior to employment.

Preferences:

Candidates should have a high potential for significant scholarship and impact through both research and teaching, including through multi-disciplinary research collaboration.

Additional Information:

Salary Range: $115,000 – $140,000.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of 8 academic units in the Clark School. Its undergraduate and graduate degree programs in mechanical engineering are ranked #17 overall and #11 and #9 among public programs by the U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the Department of Mechanical Engineering boasts the largest and most comprehensive graduate degree program in the field of reliability and risk analysis of engineered systems and processes. The department is home to multi-disciplinary research centers such as the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE), the Center for Engineering Concepts Development (CECD), the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE), the Center for Industrial Artificial Intelligence (IAI), the Center for Risk and Reliability (CRR), and the Center for Sustainability in the Built Environment (City@UMD). Department faculty are also active in the Maryland Robotics Center (MRC), the Maryland NanoCenter, the Maryland Energy Innovation Institute (MEII), the Maryland Transportation Institute (MTI), the Robert E. Fischell Institute for Biomedical Devices (REFBDI), and the Quantum Technology Center (QTC). The innovation and entrepreneurship programs on campus recently brought the University to the top 10 in Entrepreneurship Magazine.

Some notable facts include:
  • The Clark School received the 8th largest gift in history to a public higher education institution from the A. James & Alice B Clark Foundation of $220M. This includes funding to assist faculty and attract and fund first-year Ph.D. students.
  • The Department of Mechanical Engineering faculty includes three winners of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers and eleven recipients of the NSF CAREER award.
  • The Department of Mechanical Engineering research expenditures for FY 24 was $25.9M.
  • In the 2023/24 academic year, the 12,000 some alumni of the Department of Mechanical Engineering grew by 327 students who graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees and 98 students who graduated with MS or PhD degrees.
  • In the 2023/24 academic year, faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering were recognized with the Southeastern Universities Research Association Early Career Scientist Award, the C.E. Taylor Award from the Society for Experimental Mechanics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Henry Hess Early Career Publication Award, and named as Fellow to the Royal Academy of Engineering.
  • The Great College Park initiative is a $1B public-private investment in the town that is the home of UMD. It is creating not only a dynamic and innovative academic environment, but also a vibrant downtown community with restaurants, new residential units, live music and amenities.
