Research Assistant

Job Description

The Department of Mental Health is seeking a Research Assistant to assist the study Principal Investigator and his Senior Research Program Supervisor in providing expert support, training, organization, and day to day administration of the assessment components of a project within the Center for Prevention and Early Intervention.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Successful candidates must be trained in conducting school & classroom-based research study assessments.
  • Multiple tasks include assisting in training and scheduling TLC research staff for field work and participant recruitment.
  • Additional duties include conducting assessments in schools and homes with identified preteens and parents enrolled in the study.
  • Assisting with the verifying and logging of confidential data into a centralized database, and communicating with the multiple participants around the assessments.
  • Further duties include assisting with the reviewing of data for accuracy and completeness, generating access reports, etc. with the Center PI & Sr. Research Program Supervisor.
  • The candidate will work closely with parents and their preteen children, teachers, school administrators, and other research collaborators around the project being conducted by the Center for Prevention and Early Intervention.
  • Candidates will also meet regularly with the research team to help conduct weekly supervision meetings.
  • Additional duties include but are not limited to assisting the Sr. Research Program Manager with the training and supervising of TLC research staff when collecting data using computerized and web-based interviewing materials.
  • The candidate will be expected to participate in the recruitment of study participants and data collection.
  • The candidate will also assist the PI and Sr. Research Program Supervisor in providing extensive training for TLC research staff with respect to recruitment and/or communication with parents, preteens, teachers and school administrators, building rapport among the field team members, and conducting unbiased computerized assessments.
  • The candidate will also assist the PI and Sr. Research Program Supervisor in the supervision of TLC research staff in recruitment and assessment procedures, setting the daily schedule for research assistants, monitoring their progress, and ensuring that quality control procedures are adhered to.
  • The candidate will also assist the PI and Sr. Research Program Supervisor in developing and implementing operational procedures and in developing timelines for assessment activities for multiple Center projects.
  • The Candidate will maintain good working knowledge of all assigned study protocols and reporting requirements. Maintain compliance with IRB regulations and Certificate of Confidentiality regulations.
  • The Candidate is expected to collaborate with Center investigators and staff to efficiently move forward the Center’s research projects and proposals.
  • Additionally, the candidate will collect and compile all relevant information, including analyzed data needed to successfully run and write both standard and non-standard reports.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 18 months related work experience, to include a combination of the following: at least 2 months direct experience with data collection in schools, at least 6 months experience conducting or assisting a research team to conduct grant funded research projects in a University setting, at least 2 months experience working with school systems, teachers, and child/adolescent minority populations, and/or at least 12 months working with individuals to address sensitive and confidential topics including mental health and suicidality.
  • Experience in navigating day-to-day operations of a university-based study.
  • Experience in conducting classroom-based research with school-aged participants.
  • Experience interviewing youth, teachers, and/or adults.
  • Experience with trauma-informed interviewing practices and crisis intervention.
  • Experience with financial and administrative tasks in an office setting and/or for a team.
  • Familiarity with Qualtrics and SAP.
  • Knowledge of MS Access, Excel, and Word, SPSS, and Teams.
  • Training in trauma-informed interview practices, familiarity with Mental Health First Aid, and/or mental health crisis intervention capability strongly preferred.

Role/Level/Range: ACRO40/E/03/CD  
Starting Salary Range: $17.20 - $30.30 HRLY ($49,400 targeted; Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday to Friday: 9:00am – 5:00pm, Evening hours during regular work week and daytime hours on weekends during fielding periods 
Exempt Status: Non-Exempt
