About the Department

The Department of Computer Science is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research intensive, teaching intensive and professional activities. It is one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to, or larger than, a number of NC State University colleges and divisions.

Essential Job Duties

The primary role of the academic adviser is to advise undergraduate students in the Department of Computer Science regarding academic requirements (matriculation through graduation), course selection and registration, and other aspects of student success.

The academic adviser will work collaboratively in our shared model of academic advising. The academic adviser will support various efforts in the Department/College as needed including orientation, welcome week, open house, outreach events, and commencement..

Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, adult/higher education, computer science, or related field. A bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Experience assisting students with creation of success plans that include curricular and co-curricular goals.
  • Ability to appropriately document meetings with students with a high level of accuracy
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of stakeholders under pressure while meeting competing deadlines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices, and ethics of undergraduate advising as recommended by NACADA
  • Ability to interact with students at varying developmental stages in a confidential environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and advising skills
  • Be comfortable speaking to large groups
  • Prove commitment to professional development/workshops/trainings to remain up to date regarding degree requirements and academic policies
  • Appreciation for the various perspectives, identities, backgrounds, ages, and education goals of undergraduate students in the 21st century
  • Evidence of commitment to working in a team environment and willingness to support departmental and college initiatives

  • Experience in academic advising at the college level
  • Evidence of effective presentations delivered in a large-group environment
