ITRE is an institutional research center administered by North Carolina State University. Located within the University’s visionary Centennial Campus, ITRE conducts surface, water, and air transportation research, while providing professional training and educational opportunities. The Institute serves all 16 statewide campuses in the University of North Carolina (UNC) system and partners with transportation professionals around the globe.

The University of North Carolina, Office of the President, designated ITRE in a Memorandum of Understanding to work in partnership with the Technical University of Lisbon in the area of Transportation and Environment. ITRE became a member of the North Carolina Transportation Consortium in 2002, and was the lead institute for the Southeastern Transportation Center (a USDOT University Transportation Center) from 1989-1995.

Essential Job Duties

Primary roles of the Training and Events Specialist will be serving as co-chair for the Planning committee and chair of its Logistics subcommittee for the biennial NC Traffic Safety Conference & Expo and related projects of the NCDOT Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s NC Vision Zero initiative. As the Training and Events Specialist, you will also principally support the NC Airport Technical Assistance Program (NC AirTAP), a joint project of ITRE and the NCDOT Division of Aviation providing educational offerings, information resources, and related assistance to the state’s airport professionals.

In this role you will develop and implement research and online learning projects, plan and execute professional training events, manage research and event contracts, and serve as a research liaison for transportation clients and stakeholders. This role will work towards applying these research findings to studies and campaigns in North Carolina. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following five key areas:

Analyze and Summarize Data
  • Interpret key highway safety statistics for non-technical audiences and develop strategies to reach key demographic groups through social marketing behavior research.

Content and Campaign Development
  • Compose content and design social norm campaigns using innovative approaches to effectively reach specific audiences with impactful messages.

Training and Event Management
  • Independently develop and coordinate training courses, webinars, and events based on current research and client needs. 
  • Handle logistics, materials, and multimedia production for in-person, hybrid, and online training events. 
  • Manage event registration systems, email listservs, and contact databases.

Partnership Development and Communication
  • Pursue and maintain partnerships with safety stakeholders, researchers, and State agencies. 
  • Lead communication efforts and travel to support research and events.

Vendor and Contract Management
  • Oversee contract management, including the selection of third-party vendors and coordination with event venues, audiovisual services, and conference hotels.

Other Responsibilities

Additional responsibilities will include: networking with clients; presenting research at conferences; maintain communications with NCDOT and other transportation professionals; and traveing to traffic safety events to disseminate information, resources, and present research.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

● Demonstrated research abilities with attention to detail
● Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
● Extensive experience with event coordination/planning including leading large conference events
● Strong editing and proofreading skills
● Demonstrated experience with learning management systems, software applications, and equipment used in online learning, audiovisual productions, and event technology support services
● Experience with literature reviews

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of/experience with behavior change research
  • Understanding of traffic safety research and strategies for affecting health behaviors
  • Experience with social marketing strategies and campaign development
  • Experience with survey design, development, and data analysis
  • Public speaking experience
  • Instructional design (hybrid events, online learning)
  • Webinar hosting
  • Registration services for webinars, in-person training events, and conferences
  • Video editing
  • Experience with the following instructional and creative technologies:
    • Google Workspace applications (e.g., Drive, Docs, Sheets)
    • Zoom for Meetings and Webinars
    • Adobe Creative Cloud (Premiere Pro, Audition, Photoshop, Acrobat)
    • Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
    • Registration and Event Management Systems (e.g., Cvent)
    • Learning Management Systems (e.g., Moodle)
    • Video Capture and Streaming applications (e.g., Panopto, YouTube Studio)
