Job Summary:
The Director of Learning and Engagement (DoLE) at The Clark, reporting to the Deputy Director/Chief Curator, will lead the strategy, planning, and staff of the Learning and Engagement Division, encompassing Education and Public Programs. The DoLE will enhance educational and public programs aligned with The Clark’s strategic plan, broadening its reach and fostering appreciation for art among diverse audiences. The DoLE will position The Clark as an inclusive leader in art education and community engagement.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include:

  • Guiding all strategy, annual planning, staffing, and operations within the Division of Learning and Engagement.
  • Ensuring that the departments of Education and Public Programs support the goals outlined in the strategic plan, including initiatives such as diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA).
  • Serving as an ambassador for the Clark, developing and maintaining positive relationships with local, national, and international partners in education, philanthropy, the public sector, and peer institutions. Community engagement and outreach are essential aspects of the role, with a focus on expanding the Clark’s reach in western Massachusetts and surrounding regions, especially among underserved audiences.
  • Collaborating with schools, universities, and community groups to advocate for the Clark’s educational and public programs.
  • Establishing the Clark as a safe and welcoming place for all individuals; nurturing existing relationships and working to deepen engagement with underrepresented and underserved communities.
  • Collaborating across departments, the DoLE will enhance the efficiency and efficacy of outreach related to Institute projects and identify opportunities for improvement and growth.
  • Broadening the Clark’s reach through educational and public programs that connect to its collections, exhibitions, grounds, and mission.
  • Overseeing program initiatives such as expanding school tours, developing nature-oriented education programs, establishing community partnerships, leading the development of a technical career residential internship program, and designing a creative space(s).
  • Evaluating program effectiveness and refining strategies to meet the Clark’s goals.


Required Skills/Abilities

  • Understanding of program evaluation and experience with underserved audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong management and supervisory skills with a commitment to staff development.
  • Knowledge of national and international education standards.
  • Ability to innovate and reflect on program effectiveness using data.
  • Strong interpretive and research skills.


Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency in utilizing technology for educational purposes.

Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree in relevant field and a minimum of ten (10) years of leadership experience in a museum setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing museum education and engagement programs. 
  • Administrative experience in budgeting, fundraising, and staff management.
  • Experience with digital program development and stakeholder engagement.


Minimum Starting Salary: $122,000/yr.

  • Ability to sit at a desk/workstation and use a computer for prolonged periods of time.


Work Environment:

  • Work will be performed in an office environment and museum spaces.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
