TITLE: People and Culture Officer (Generalist)

DEPARTMENT: People and Culture

REPORTS TO: Director of People and Culture

SALARY RANGE: Level 6, 75K-85K, commensurate with experience

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION : Exempt, Non-Union

LOCATION: Washington, DC Office, Onsite 2 days per week

ABOUT EARTHRIGHTS:
EarthRights International is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that combines the power of law with the power of people in defense of human rights and the environment. We take legal action against perpetrators of earth rights abuses, train activists, and work with communities to demand meaningful and lasting change.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The People and Culture Officer (Generalist) is a hands-on role that provides full cycle Human Resources support to the People and Culture Director. The role is critical in executing our people initiatives, providing great internal employee support, and driving HR functional excellence and process improvement. The generalist handles the day to day functions for the People and Culture team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Organizational Development

  • Along with the P&C Director, monitor the organization's culture so that it supports the attainment of the company's goals and promotes employee satisfaction.
  • Assists with implementation of annual employee engagement survey through an external vendor. Works with the P&C Director on development and implementation of action plans.
  • Assists with company-wide committees and meetings including staff meeting, training, environmental health, and safety.
  • Plans employee engagement activities, programs and events, e.g., winter party & gift distribution; monthly birthday & anniversary celebrations, employee recognition and wellness programs, etc.
  • Ensures 6-month and annual evaluations are completed. Assists Director with facilitation, review and completion.

Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS)

  • Manages and Maintains content for Human Resources sections of the Employees Intranet and HRIS.
  • Maintains employee-related databases. Prepares reports that are necessary to carry out the functions of the department.
  • Fully utilizes Human Resources software to the organization’s advantage.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Maintains shared folder containing up-to-date employee compensation data (title, career band, salary, awards, bonuses, demographic information)
  • Inputs pay data into BambooHR and interfaces with Finance Department about payroll as needed.
  • Provides day-to-day benefits administration services. Assists employees with claim issues, in conjunction with third party administrator and/or broker.
  • Develop and schedule benefits orientations and benefits training.
  • Administers disability and worker's compensation claims in coordination with external vendors.
  • Coordinates open enrollment sessions, and updates changes in HR portals.

Training and Development

  • Assist with the Professional Development process and assist managers with the selection and contracting of external training programs and consultants.
  • Assist P&C Director to provide necessary education and materials to managers and employees including workshops, manuals, employee handbooks, and standardized reports.
  • Maintain employee training records.
  • Inputs employee info into third-party online employee training system.

Recruitment, Onboarding and Off boarding

  • Oversee the entire recruitment and hiring process, including supporting hiring teams as needed.
  • Continuously build and oversee a candidate pipeline.
  • Posts requisitions on recruitment websites.
  • Plans and coordinates new hire orientation.
  • Intern program coordinator.
  • Ensures all steps of the onboarding and off boarding process are implemented in a timely manner. Communicates new hire arrivals with all departments e.g. IT, Finance, Executive Leadership etc.

Policies, Processes, and Grievance Mechanisms

  • Provide support to human resources leads in the Amazon and Mekong regional offices to manage local hiring processes and ensure regional staff compliance with global personnel policies.
  • Support managers in taking the appropriate disciplinary action against employees who violate rules and regulations, and manage the HR grievance process, escalating issues to the P&C Director as necessary.
  • Assists with labor relations matters in conjunction with the P&C Director and Deputy Director.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • Assist with identifying and scheduling one-time and annual Gender/DEI trainings.
  • Assist in reviewing policies to ensure consistency with DEI goals and actions.

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Liaises with other Ad-Hoc organization-wide committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

COMPETENCIES

  • Organization - Shows high attention to detail and is extremely organized. Adept at developing and maintaining systems and processes.
  • Project Management - Proven track record of completing projects in a high-pressure environment, with ability to multi-task, prioritize and track and meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Communication - Strong written, oral, and visual communication skills, including editing and formatting written documents.
  • Integrity - Demonstrates commitment to organizational values. Maintains high standards of trust and confidentiality.
  • Technological Skills - Adept in use of standard office computing software, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Interpersonal Skills - Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with teams. Comfortable interacting in diverse environments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in human resources or related field
  • Proficient in BambooHR, ADP, Paychex or similar HRIS
  • Minimum 4 years of experience supporting senior management or executives, preferably within a nonprofit organization
  • Minimum 5 years of effective HR administration and people management skills
  • Any additional training and certification in Human Resources will be considered an advantage
  • Exposure to Labor Law and employment equity regulations
  • Full understanding of HR functions and best practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly motivated self-starter committed to work that makes an impact
