POSITION: Finance and Operations Director

DEPARTMENT: Haskell Foundation

STATUS: Full Time

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

LOCATION: Lawrence, KS in Office (at least 4 days/week)

PAY RANGE: $70,000 to $75,000 DOE + medical & dental

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Our mission is to support Haskell Indian Nations University as a national center for intertribal education, research and cultural programs. Money raised by the Haskell Foundation will assist with unmet needs of the university that are beyond appropriated funds provided by the Bureau of Indian Education.

POSITION SUMMARY

We are in search of a Finance and Operations Director who will support our needs as a growing organization. This role is perfect for an experienced finance professional who is eager to manage daily financial tasks but is also looking to contribute to broader operational strategies. You'll work closely with executive leadership, bringing expertise and insights that support growth.

As the Finance and Operations Director, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient functioning of all operational and financial aspects of the organization. This is a key leadership role that requires strong strategic planning, financial acumen, accounting activities, and risk management skills

FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT

  • Oversee the development and management of the organizational budget up to $1.5 million dollars
  • Monitor financial management practices to ensure compliance with all finance standards and legal requirements
  • Oversee all financial operations within each department to ensure they are spending within budget and following organization’s financial policies
  • Update financial policies as needed
  • Support development of project budgets
  • Analyze financial performance of the organization and develop reports for the executive team and board of directors
  • Review organization revenue and expenses to make forecasts and projections on performance
  • Research and review investments to make recommendations on modifications to portfolio
  • Track investment portfolio and incorporate changes in financial reports
  • Ensure appropriate financial reporting, including for federal government grants
  • Manage relationships with external financial firms including accounting firm, financial advisor, and audit prep
  • Oversee procurement, ensuring cost-effective purchasing and adherence to budget for vendor services, supplies, and equipment
  • Execute annual finance and operations projects, including valuations, tax compliance, and investor confirmations, meeting all regulatory standards and deadlines
  • Serve on the Board Finance Committee and provide finance reports to the Board

OPERATIONS ADMINISTRATION

  • Review and update all organizational policies and procedures, according to nonprofit best practice standards and in accordance to uniform guidance
  • Develop organizational systems to support a growing organization
  • Develop and maintain fundraising software and automations
  • Manage insurance policies and all other nonprofit business compliance needs
  • Manage procurement process ensuring compliance with government regulations
  • Maintain registrations
  • Manage invoicing and government drawdowns
  • Manage hiring process for new staff and contractors as needed
  • Ensure compliance with operations and HR policies and procedures, including for government grants
  • Assist with maintaining and improving organizational culture that attracts and motivates a top-quality, diverse staff
  • Support implementation and use of staff development opportunities
  • Prepare for Board meetings, including facilitating financials, reporting, and agenda setting
  • Assist Executive Director as required in operations

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, with a strong foundation in financial management and operational strategies. Preference will be given to candidates with advanced qualifications such as CPA or CMA.
  • 3+ years of experience in finance and operations, with a preference for backgrounds in nonprofit management and higher education
  • Strong track record in financial operations, including invoicing, budgeting, and financial analysis.
  • Experience with U.S. Federal Government Grants, Federal Audits, and reporting is required
  • Exceptional communication skills for articulating financial concepts to a varied audience.
  • Strategic and analytical thinking capabilities with evidence of contributing to business growth.
  • Uncompromised integrity and professionalism, particularly in managing sensitive information
  • Nonprofit, cost accounting experience. QuickBooks preferred
  • Experienced in working with diverse groups and/or individuals
  • Experience working with American Indians & Alaska Natives

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in finance, marketing, business administration or a related field
  • 2+ experience in lead accounting and finance roles preferred
  • Experience managing one or more areas in human resources (ex. benefits, compensation, employee relations, recruitment, training)
  • Excellent supervisory skills and ability to manage, develop and evaluate staff working on multiple, disparate projects
