Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland (College Park) Department of Geographical Sciences is searching for a Senior Systems Architect/Administrator and Storage Engineer to support global environmental change research at the Global Land Analysis and Discovery laboratory in the Department of Geographical Sciences at the University of Maryland. The GLAD lab monitors global land change using time-series satellite imagery, including tropical deforestation, crop monitoring, urbanization, among other themes. Results quantify the changing balance between economic land uses and natural systems on a changing planet. To do our work, the GLAD lab employs a data intensive HPC to process Pb scale raster inputs and is supported by various funding sources from NASA, USAID, the government of Norway, Bezos Earth Fund, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. We are seeking talented engineers to manage our processing system.

The Sr. Storage Engineer is responsible for large PB scale storage environments in the department and GLAD environments. The engineer is responsible for a lot of high capacity FC based storage arrays and software defined storage systems running on Ceph. The position is responsible for about 72PB of raw storage capacity and growing. The position is also responsible for supporting backup and archive using IBM tape library spanning 10s of PB scale. The position is responsible for full life cycle management of these environments.

This position is a 12-month, full-time status. We are able to provide sponsorship of an H1B visa. The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established from $120,000 to $160,000 per year, depending on qualifications. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and technical certifications or training or work experience.

Experience:
  • Experience managing large capacity storage environments.
  • Experience with setting up and managing PB scale environments.
  • Experience with setting up IBM spectrum protect backup and archive solution and managing the IBM tape library with LTO tapes.
  • Experience managing IBM tape library.
  • Experience managing brocade SAN switches and managing zones.
  • Experience managing Dell MD/ME series arrays and Netapp E-series arrays.
  • Experience managing Ceph cluster running in environment.
  • Experience managing linux cluster environments to support distributed computing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Clear understanding of storage internals in Linux environment in support of Ceph.
  • Strong concepts of RAID management.

Preferences:

Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline.

Experience:
  • Experience managing large-scale environments.
  • Experience in programming in at least one high level language such Perl, Python, bash.
  • Experience with management and development tools such as Puppet, Satellite, Hiera and Ansible.
  • Experience with risk management strategy when managing large volume storage environment.
  • Experience with setting up udev devices.
  • Experience with running DB2 database on NVME drives.
  • Experience in setting layer 2 and layer 3 networks.
  • Experience in setting VLANs in layer 2 and 3 networks.
  • Experience in setting VLT in a HA environment.
  • Experience in testing environments in simulation environments.
  • Experience in setting up NAT environment across vlans.
  • Experience in setting up BGP based routing for internal and external environments.
  • Experience in setting up VXLANs.
  • Experience in setting up routing between VLANs with VRF.
  • Experience in setting up routing with external networks using static routes.
  • Experience in setting up VXLAN BGP EVPN multiple as topology.
